In his World Championship debut, David Muñoz fought throughout the race with the best riders in the category and came close to the top 10 with a hard-earned eleventh position
BOÉ Motorsports finished the Italian Grand Prix in a very positive way. The Spanish team has been able to fight again in the leading positions after a great work during the whole weekend in which David Muñoz has been the main protagonist in Moto3.
After turning 16 years old, Muñoz faced this weekend the first Grand Prix of his life. With the double disadvantage of being a rookie and having seven races less than his rivals, Muñoz was gradually growing and learning at a very fast pace, lowering his times and showing a great progression that surprised many. A good example of this progression is that, on Friday, in the first free practice session David finished in twenty-seventh position and today, in the warm up, he was the sixth fastest Moto3 rider.
This great form was reflected from the start of the race. Muñoz managed to start from fifteenth position with a great concentration that allowed him to gain five positions in the first lap. The BOÉ Motorsports rider set a very competitive pace and managed to be in the group that was fighting for the podium positions during the early stages of the race, while later he settled in the second group, a group formed by up to eight riders that Muñoz came to lead. In addition to this great pace, the Andalusian rider showed great maturity with many overtakes and good battles with riders of great experience in the category. In the end, David Muñoz finished eleventh and scored his first five points in the Moto3 World Championship, a really promising start.
For her part, Ana Carrasco once again improved her starting position in the race. Carrasco, who started from 28th, managed to finish in 23rd place. Her pace was consistent, but bad luck struck in the opening moments of the race: after the lights went out, a crash in front of Carrasco forced the BOÉ Motorsport rider to go off the track, an action that lost her valuable time with the front group.
In addition, this was a weekend in which Ana Carrasco became the woman with the most Grand Prix races in the history of the World Championship with a total of 54.
David Muñoz #44: “The race went quite well, we started very strong with the leading group and I fought with them. Then the pace dropped a bit, also the performance of the tyres, and little by little we moved away a bit from the front, but that’s what we expected. I even expected something less, on Friday when I got on the bike for the first time I didn’t expect to finish the race in this position, so I’m happy. For the next race we have to keep working on this line, we will see how it goes, but we are looking forward to continue with this progression”.
Ana Carrasco #22: “Honestly, I expected much more from today’s race but it was very complicated. At the start there was a crash that luckily I was able to avoid, but I went off the circuit and when I was able to get back on track I was already a long way off the rest of the riders. Mugello is a circuit with a lot of slipstreaming and being alone so quickly made it impossible for me to follow the group. I am disappointed because we are working hard and things are not working out, luck is not helping us either, but I hope to turn the situation around next week at the Barcelona race. We need to disconnect for a couple of days, we will try to come back stronger at our home race”.
José Ángel Gutiérrez Boé (Team Manager): “The weekend has been very positive for the whole team. David has shown that he has arrived at the World Championship with a high level and has confirmed our expectations. We bet on him, we knew he had a great talent and that he will go far, and today he was able to show his skills on track. From the beginning of the weekend we have grown with him and he has had a very mature and consistent race, especially considering that this was his debut. Today he fought to be in the top ten, but we don’t have to look at the results, we have to keep working to keep growing race after race, both with him and with Ana Carrasco. Ana had the bad luck to have a crash at the start of the race that took her away from the group, but we are still working together and we are confident that little by little we will have better races with her, the team will continue to give everything to improve”.
After the Italian Grand Prix, next weekend will be the Grand Prix of Catalonia, the home race for BOÉ Motorsports.
