Joel Kelso fought at the front and managed to finish eighth, while David Muñoz was just outside the points after starting from the pit lane
The first race of the season left a bittersweet taste for BOÉ Motorsports. The Spanish team had a good result with Joel Kelso, but bad luck struck David Muñoz just before the start of the race.
After a very solid weekend from both BOÉ Motorsports riders, the team had high hopes for this race with both riders, as in all the sessions of the weekend both Kelso and Muñoz had positioned themselves as two of the candidates to fight for the leading positions.
After finishing the warm-up lap, David Muñoz’s bike stopped and the stewards forced him to start from the pit lane. From that moment on, Muñoz had to manage a completely different race to what he had planned. Despite this inconvenience, the Spanish rider was able to finish the race just outside the points, in sixteenth position.
For his part, Joel Kelso made a very good start that allowed him to be in the fight at the front from the start of the race. As the laps went by, the Australian rider dropped back a bit from the fight for the podium, but was finally able to cross the finish line in eighth position, a good result in his first race with BOÉ Motorsports.
Joel Kelso:“We tried the soft tyre today and it didn’t work. I thought we could make it work, but when I was in the podium positions I realised that the pace wasn’t good enough to get away from the group, so I focused on saving the tyres. I suffered, but I had to prove it. I think we are in a good line of work, we have been one of the fastest during the weekend. In Portugal we will go for more”.
David Muñoz:“I think I could have had a good race today, I felt very good. On the grid my bike stopped, something that happened that neither the team nor I were to blame, it was a coincidence. We have seen what the problem was, KTM will fix it, so in that sense we are calm. It was a pity because I think I could have fought at the front, we were doing well, so thank you very much to the team for this weekend and to everyone who supports me”.
The next Grand Prix will be held in Portugal, during the weekend of 23-24 March.
