Despite David Muñoz and Vicente Pérez being two of the fastest riders of the weekend, the two Spaniards were unable to finish the race
The Australian Grand Prix came to an end with very difficult conditions for all the riders in the MotoGP World Championship. In anticipation of these adverse conditions, the championship organisers decided to hold an extraordinary warm up session for the riders to get a feel for the wet and windy track.
In this warm up, BOÉ Motorsports was once again one of the best teams in the classification with David Muñoz in second position (1:49.346) and Vicente Pérez in ninth place (1:50.956). With these results, the two Spanish riders faced the race with a lot of confidence, in which David Muñoz had to serve a penalty that forced him to do two long laps.
The rain and the wind were a challenge. On the formation lap of the starting grid Vicente Pérez went off the track and entered the pit-lane. The BOÉ Motorsports technical team quickly got the bike back on track, but the Valencian rider had to start the race from the last position.
After a very difficult start for everyone, Muñoz completed the two long laps in the early stages very quickly. Despite losing many positions, the BOÉ Motorsports rider came back in a few laps with a very similar pace to the first classified riders. The bad luck for him came with eleven laps to go, when David crashed when he was approaching the top 5.
For his part, Vicente Pérez made a spectacular comeback. The rider from Cullera started from the last position and little by little he grew with a very steady pace. Pérez was very strong all weekend despite not being a regular rider in the championship and in the race he was able to fight for a top ten finish. However, Vicente also had the bad luck to crash with three laps to go.
David Muñoz:“We finished a weekend in which we were very strong. We went from better to worse, for one reason or another we couldn’t finish well, but I’m happy with the way we worked from the beginning. We made a step forward, especially in practice. I think the race was a difficult situation, to see who could last the longest on the bike. I had pace, I had speed, I had everything, but the two long laps penalised me a lot. Even so, we have to be happy because the whole team did a good job. In the crash I couldn’t do anything, the front of the bike closed when I was going into the corner and it was impossible to continue in the race. Thank you very much to the team for all their work and to all the people who support me”.
Vicente Pérez: “It has been a very positive weekend. To get a top 10 in the dry qualifying session is a good result after four months without a Moto3 bike and without the pace of the championship. In the difficult conditions I didn’t feel entirely comfortable, although if I had been a bit more reserved I could have finished further ahead. I started last and in a few laps I was eleventh or twelfth. Now we have to keep working in the same way, we have done a great job this weekend and we have a good work base”.
The next Grand Prix will be held in Thailand, during the weekend of 28th and 29th October.
